CAREER:

In South Africa, Gandhi faced discrimination directed at Indians. He was thrown off a train at Pietermaritzburg after refusing to move from the first class to a third class coach while holding a valid first class ticket. Traveling further on by stagecoach, he was beaten by a driver for refusing to travel on the foot board to make room for a European passenger. He suffered other hardships on the journey as well, including being barred from several hotels. In another incident, the magistrate of a Durban court ordered Gandhi to remove his turban, which he refused to do. These events were a turning point in his life, awakening him to social injustice and influencing his subsequent social activism. It was through witnessing firsthand the racism, prejudice and injustice against Indians in South Africa that Gandhi started to question his people's status within the British Empire, and his own place in society.

In 1915, Gandhi returned from South Africa to live in India. He spoke at the conventions of the Indian National Congress, but was primarily introduced to Indian issues, politics and the Indian people by Gopal Krishna Gokhale, a respected leader of the Congress Party at the time.

Gandhi's principles See also: Gandhism Truth Gandhi dedicated his life to the wider purpose of discovering truth, or Satya. He tried to achieve this by learning from his own mistakes and conducting experiments on himself. He called his autobiography The Story of My Experiments with Truth. Gandhi stated that the most important battle to fight was overcoming his own demons, fears, and insecurities. Gandhi summarized his beliefs first when he said "God is Truth". He would later change this statement to "Truth is God". Thus, Satya (Truth) in Gandhi's philosophy is "God". Nonviolence Although Mahatama Gandhi was in no way the originator of the principle of non-violence, he was the first to apply it in the political field on a huge scale.[28] The concept of nonviolence (ahimsa) and nonresistance has a long history in Indian religious thought and has had many revivals in Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, Jewish and Christian contexts. Bush finished his high school years at Phillips Academy, a boarding school (then all-male) in Andover, Massachusetts, where he played baseball and during his senior year was the head cheerleader.Bush attended Yale University from 1964 to 1968, graduating with a Bachelor's degree in history.During this time, he was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon, being elected the fraternity's president during his senior year.Bush also became a member of the secretive Skull and Bones society as a college senior. He characterized himself as an average student. Beginning in the fall of 1973, Bush attended the Harvard Business School, where he earned an MBA. He is the only US President to have earned an MBA.

CAREER:

In 1978, Bush ran for the House of Representatives from Texas's 19th congressional district. His opponent, Kent Hance, portrayed him as being out of touch with rural Texans; Bush lost the election by 6,000 votes (6%) of the 103,000 votes cast.He returned to the oil industry and began a series of small, independent oil exploration companies. He created Arbusto Energy, and later changed the name to Bush Exploration. In 1984, his company merged with the larger Spectrum 7, and Bush became chairman. The company was hurt by a decline in oil prices, and as a result, it folded into Harken Energy.Bush served on the board of directors for Harken.Questions of possible insider trading involving Harken arose, but the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) investigation concluded that the information Bush had at the time of his stock sale was not sufficient to constitute insider trading.

Bush moved his family to Washington, D.C. in 1988 to work on his father's campaign for the U.S. presidency. He worked as a campaign adviser and served as liaison to the media;he assisted his father by campaigning across the country.Returning to Texas after the successful campaign, he purchased a share in the Texas Rangers baseball franchise in April 1989, where he served as managing general partner for five years. He actively led the team's projects and regularly attended its games, often choosing to sit in the open stands with fans. The sale of Bush's shares in the Rangers in 1998 brought him over $15 million from his initial $800,000 investment.

In December 1991, Bush was one of seven people named by his father to run his father's 1992 Presidential re-election campaign as "campaign advisor".The prior month, Bush had been asked by his father to tell White House chief of staff John H. Sununu that he should resign.

Gates is also known as an avid reader, and the ceiling of his large home library is engraved with a quotation from The Great Gatsby. He also enjoys playing bridge, tennis, and golf.

Gates was number one on the "Forbes 400" list from 1993 through to 2007 and number one on Forbes list of "The World's Richest People" from 1995 to 2007 and 2009. In 1999, Gates's wealth briefly surpassed $101 billion, causing the media to call him a "centibillionaire". Since 2000, the nominal value of his Microsoft holdings has declined due to a fall in Microsoft's stock price after the dot-com bubble burst and the multi-billion dollar donations he has made to his charitable foundations. In a May 2006 interview, Gates commented that he wished that he were not the richest man in the world because he disliked the attention it brought.

CAREER:

BASIC
MITS Altair 8800 Computer with 8-inch (200 mm) floppy disk system After reading the January 1975 issue of Popular Electronics that demonstrated the Altair 8800, Gates contacted Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS), the creators of the new microcomputer, to inform them that he and others were working on a BASIC interpreter for the platform. In reality, Gates and Allen did not have an Altair and had not written code for it; they merely wanted to gauge MITS's interest. MITS president Ed Roberts agreed to meet them for a demo, and over the course of a few weeks they developed an Altair emulator that ran on a minicomputer, and then the BASIC interpreter. The demonstration, held at MITS's offices in Albuquerque, was a success and resulted in a deal with MITS to distribute the interpreter as Altair BASIC.

Gates oversaw Microsoft's company restructuring on June 25, 1981, which re-incorporated the company in Washington and made Gates President of Microsoft and the Chairman of the Board.Microsoft launched its first retail version of Microsoft Windows on November 20, 1985, and in August, the company struck a deal with IBM to develop a separate operating system called OS/2. Although the two companies successfully developed the first version of the new system, mounting creative differences undermined the partnership. Gates distributed an internal memo on May 16, 1991 announcing that the OS/2 partnership was over and Microsoft would shift its efforts to the Windows NT kernel development.

Time magazine named Gates one of the 100 people who most influenced the 20th century, as well as one of the 100 most influential people of 2004, 2005, and 2006. Nehru's Biography

BIO-DATA:

Name:Jawaharlal Nehru

Parents:Swarup Rani and Motilal Nehru

Born:14 November 1889(1889-11-14),Allahabad, United Provinces, India

Died :27 May 1964 (aged 74),New Delhi, India

Nationality :Indian

Spouse: Kamala Nehru

Children: Indira Gandhi

Profession :Barrister

Religion :Hindu

Nehru and his colleagues had been released as the British Cabinet Mission arrived to propose plans for transfer of power. Once elected, Nehru headed an interim government, which was impaired by outbreaks of communal violence and political disorder, and the opposition of the Muslim League led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who were demanding a separate Muslim state of Pakistan. After failed bids to form coalitions, Nehru reluctantly supported the partition of India as per a plan released by the British on 3 June 1947. He would take office as the Prime Minister of India on 15 August, and delivered his inaugural address titled "A Tryst With Destiny":

CAREER:

Economic policies

Nehru presided over the introduction of a modified, "Indian" version of state planning and control over the economy. Creating the Planning commission of India, Nehru drew up the first Five-Year Plan in 1951, which charted the government's investments in industries and agriculture. Increasing business and income taxes, Nehru envisaged a mixed economy in which the government would manage strategic industries such as mining, electricity and heavy industries, serving public interest and a check to private enterprise. Nehru pursued land redistribution and launched programmes to build irrigation canals, dams and spread the use of fertilizers to increase agricultural production. He also pioneered a series of community development programs aimed at spreading diverse cottage industries and increasing efficiency into rural India. While encouraging the construction of large dams (which Nehru called the 'new temples of India'), irrigation works and the generation of hydroelectricity, Nehru also launched India's programme to harness nuclear energy.

Education and social reform

Jawaharlal Nehru was a passionate advocate of education for India's children and youth, believing it essential for India's future progress. His government oversaw the establishment of many institutions of higher learning, including the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institutes of Management. Nehru also outlined a commitment in his five-year plans to guarantee free and compulsory primary education to all of India's children. For this purpose, Nehru oversaw the creation of mass village enrollment programmes and the construction of thousands of schools. Nehru also launched initiatives such as the provision of free milk and meals to children in order to fight malnutrition. Adult education centres, vocational and technical schools were also organised for adults, especially in the rural areas.

National security and foreign policy

Although having promised in 1948 to hold a plebiscite in Kashmir under the auspices of the U.N., Nehru grew increasingly wary of the U.N. and declined to hold a plebiscite in 1953. He ordered the arrest of the Kashmiri politician Sheikh Abdullah, whom he had previously supported but now suspected of harbouring separatist ambitions; Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad replaced him. On the international scene, Nehru was a champion of pacifism and a strong supporter of the United Nations. He pioneered the policy of non-alignment and co-founded the Non-Aligned Movement of nations professing neutrality between the rival blocs of nations led by the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. Recognising the People's Republic of China soon after its founding (while most of the Western bloc continued relations with the Republic of China), Nehru sought to establish warm and friendly relations with it despite the invasion of Tibet in 1950, and hoped to act as an intermediary to bridge the gulf and tensions between the communist states and the Western bloc. nt size> Read more...

Obama was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996, succeeding State Senator Alice Palmer as Senator from Illinois's 13th District, which then spanned Chicago South Side neighborhoods from Hyde Park-Kenwood south to South Shore and west to Chicago Lawn. Once elected, Obama gained bipartisan support for legislation reforming ethics and health care laws. He sponsored a law increasing tax credits for low-income workers, negotiated welfare reform, and promoted increased subsidies for childcare.[49] In 2001, as co-chairman of the bipartisan Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, Obama supported Republican Governor Ryan's payday loan regulations and predatory mortgage lending regulations aimed at averting home foreclosures. 2004 U.S. Senate campaign

In May 2002, Obama commissioned a poll to assess his prospects in a 2004 U.S. Senate race; he created a campaign committee, began raising funds and lined up political media consultant David Axelrod by August 2002, and formally announced his candidacy in January 2003.Decisions by Republican incumbent Peter Fitzgerald and his Democratic predecessor Carol Moseley Braun not to contest the race launched wide-open Democratic and Republican primary contests involving fifteen candidates.Obama's candidacy was boosted by Axelrod's advertising campaign featuring images of the late Chicago Mayor Harold Washington and an endorsement by the daughter of the late Paul Simon, former U.S. Senator for Illinois. In the March 2004 primary election, Obama won an unexpected landslide victory with 53% of the vote in a seven-candidate field, 29% ahead of his nearest Democratic rival, which overnight made him a rising star in the national Democratic Party and started speculation about a presidential future.

2008 presidential campaign

Obama stands on stage with his wife and two daughters just before announcing his presidential candidacy in Springfield, Illinois, Feb. 10, 2007. On February 10, 2007, Obama announced his candidacy for President of the United States in front of the Old State Capitol building in Springfield, Illinois. The choice of the announcement site was symbolic because it was also where Abraham Lincoln delivered his historic "House Divided" speech in 1858.Throughout the campaign, Obama emphasized the issues of rapidly ending the Iraq War, increasing energy independence and providing universal health care. Another book by Anupama Chopra, "King of Bollywood: Shahrukh Khan and the seductive world of Indian cinema", was released in 2007. This book described the world of Bollywood through Khan's life.

CAREER AND AWARDS:

Background Khan studied acting under celebrated Theatre Director Barry John at Delhi's Theatre Action Group (TAG). In 2007, John commented thus on his former pupil that, "The credit for the phenomenally successful development and management of Shahrukh's career goes to the superstar himself." Khan made his acting debut in 1988 when he appeared in the television series, Fauji, playing the role of Commando Abhimanyu Rai.He went on to appear in several other television serials, most notably in the 1989 serial, Aziz Mirza's Circus, which depicted the life of circus performers. The same year, Khan also had a minor role in the made-for-television English-language film, In Which Annie Gives it Those Ones, which was based on life at Delhi University and was written by Arundhati Roy.

Producer

Khan turned producer when he set up a production company called Dreamz Unlimited with Juhi Chawla and director Aziz Mirza in 1999. The first two of the films he produced and starred in: Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000) and Asoka (2001) were box office failures. However, his third film as a producer and star, Chalte Chalte (2003), proved a box office hit. In 2004, Khan set up another production company, Red Chillies Entertainment, and produced and starred in Main Hoon Na, another hit. The following year, he produced and starred in the fantasy film Paheli, which did poorly. It was, however, India's official entry to the Academy Awards for consideration for Best Foreign Language Film, but it did not pass the final selection. Also in 2005, Khan co-produced the supernatural horror film Kaal with Karan Johar, and performed an item number for the film with Malaika Arora Khan. Kaal was moderately successful at the box office. His company has gone on to produce Om Shanti Om (2007), in which he starred, and Billu (2009), in which he played a supporting role as a Bollywood superstar.

Awards

Shahrukh Khan got 22 Filmfare Awards for different Categories of acting. Read more...

SACHIN TENDULKAR'S Biography.

|

BIO-DATA:

Full name: Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar

Father: Ramesh Tendulkar, a Marathi novelist,

Born :24 April 1973 (1973-04-24) (age 35),Mumbai, India

Wife and Children:Anjali (born November 10, 1967), a paediatrician ,Sara (born October 12, 1997), and Arjun (born September 24, 1999).

Nickname:Little Master, Master Blaster, The Master,The Little Champion

Height :5 ft 5 in (1.7 m)

Batting style :Right-handed

Bowling style: Right-arm leg break/off break/medium

Role :Batsman

Tendulkar attended Sharadashram Vidyamandir (High School), where he began his cricketing career under the guidance of his coach and mentor, Ramakant Achrekar. During his school days he attended the MRF Pace Foundation to train as a fast bowler, but Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee, who took a world record 355 Test wickets, was unimpressed, suggesting that Tendulkar focus on his batting instead. When he was young, Tendulkar would practice for hours on end in the nets. If he became exhausted, Achrekar would put a one-Rupee-coin on the top of the stumps, and the bowler who dismissed Tendulkar would get the coin. If Tendulkar passed the whole session without getting dismissed, the coach would give him the coin. Tendulkar now considers the 13 coins he won then as some of his most prized possessions. While at school, he developed a reputation as a child prodigy. He had become a common conversation point in Mumbai circles, where there were suggestions already that he would become one of the greats. His season in 1988 was extraordinary, with Tendulkar scoring a century in every innings he played. He was involved in an unbroken 664-run partnership in a Lord Harris Shield inter-school game in 1988 with friend and team mate Vinod Kambli, who would also go on to represent India. The destructive pair reduced one bowler to tears and made the rest of the opposition unwilling to continue the game. Tendulkar scored 326* in this innings and scored over a thousand runs in the tournament.

CAREER:

Domestic career

On December 11, 1988, aged just 15 years and 232 days, Tendulkar scored 100 not-out in his debut first-class match for Mumbai against Gujarat, making him the youngest cricketer to score a century on his first-class debut. His first double century was for Mumbai while playing against the visiting Australian team at the Brabourne Stadium in 1998. Tendulkar is the only player to score a century in all three of his Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Irani Trophy debuts. In 1992, at the age of 19, Tendulkar became the first overseas born player to represent Yorkshire (Craig White, although born in Yorkshire was the first player to be signed as an overseas player by Yorkshire. He had to be listed as an overseas player as he had already played for Victoria in Australia). Tendulkar played 16 first-class matches for the county and scored 1070 runs at an average of 46.52.

Indian Premier League Tendulkar was made the icon player and captain for his home side, the Mumbai Indians in the inaugural Indian Premier League Twenty20 competition in 2008.As an icon player, he was signed for a sum of US$1,121,250, 15% more than the second-highest paid player in the team, Sanath Jayasuriya.

Captaincy

Tendulkar's two tenures as captain of the Indian cricket team were not very successful. When Tendulkar took over as Captain in 1996, it was with huge hopes and expectations. However, by 1997 the team was performing poorly. Azharuddin was credited with saying "Nahin jeetega! Chote ki naseeb main jeet nahin hai!",[28] which translates into: "He won't win! It's not in the small one's destiny". Tendulkar, succeeding Azharuddin as captain for his second term, then led India on a tour of Australia, where the visitors were comprehensively beaten 3-0 by the newly-crowned world champions.[29] Tendulkar, however, was at his usual best and won the player of the tournament award as well as player of the match in one of the games. After another Test series defeat, this time by a 0-2 margin at home against South Africa, Tendulkar resigned, and Sourav Ganguly took over as captain in 2000. Read more...

SplashData reveals 2011's 25 worst passwords

| Tuesday, November 22

Reaffirming a smaller study released earlier this year, SplashData has published a list of this year's 25 worst passwords. We've seen countless security breaches this year and in many of those cases, the hackers released the stolen data online. SplashData has used that information to compile its list. Although some of the swiped passwords were shamelessly stored in plaintext, most were encrypted. In other words, for the following passwords to even make it on the top 25 list, they must have been cracked. That just further illustrates how worthless they are:

1. password 6. monkey 11. baseball 16. ashley 21. 654321
2. 123456 7. 1234567 12. 111111 17. bailey 22. superman
3. 12345678 8. letmein 13. iloveyou 18. passw0rd 23. qazwsx
4. qwerty 9. trustno1 14. master 19. shadow 24. michael
5. abc123 10. dragon 15. sunshine 20. 123123 25. football
Naturally, if you're using any of those passwords, you should change them immediately. SplashData offers other tips on securing your Web accounts. For starters, you'll want to use passwords of at eight characters or more with mixed alphanumerics. Without the help of a service such as LastPass or RoboForm it can be difficult to remember long, randomly generated strings of text. SplashData suggests using memorable short words separated by spaces or other characters such as "eat cake at 8!" or "car_park_city?". Programs such as KeePass can safely store your passwords locally.

"Hackers can easily break into many accounts just by repeatedly trying common passwords. Even though people are encouraged to select secure, strong passwords, many people continue to choose weak, easy-to-guess ones, placing themselves at risk from fraud and identity theft," said SplashData CEO Morgan Slain. "What you don't want is a password that is easily guessable. If you have a password that is short or common or a word in the dictionary, it's like leaving your door open for identity thieves." With attackers on the prowl this holiday season, it's a great time to secure your accounts.

In a completely anecdotal side note, I feel compelled to mention that it seems some people are lured into a false sense of invincibility online. Perhaps it's because of the Web's relative anonymity, their general misunderstanding of the technology, or both. Many of the same individuals would cling to symbols of real world security -- be that an easily bypassed $10 door lock or forfeiting civil liberties to travel. Point being: it's odd that many people don't take advantage of free and easy security measures online, but they'll go to great lengths for lackluster security measures in the real world. Intel announces support for Android 2.3 on Atom E6xx series

| Saturday, September 17

Intel's next generation of Intel Atom CPUs, the E6xx series, will finally support Android come January 2012. The company confirmed this in a promo video released yesterday outlining the low-power chip's features, where it particularly mentioned support for Gingerbread 2.3. Mind you, this is a version of Android designed to run on smartphones, but the E6xx isn't specifically a smartphone chip; it's designed for use in embedded systems.
The Intel Atom E6xx series is part of the family formerly known by the codename Queens Bay and was first introduced at the 2010 IDF, where the chipmaker touted them as being their first generation of processor-based SoC. Its primary applications as outlined by Intel include retail, fitness equipment, digital signage and in-vehicle systems.
Still, perhaps this marks a next step in the company's push toward mobile devices. Intel has already promised Intel-based Honeycomb tablets, but its efforts to get Android running on x86 hardware haven't seen much progress yet.
Earlier this year the company launched its Oak Trail platform, claiming over 35 tablet and hybrid designs from multiple manufacturers. Android 3.0 is expected to be a big part of Intel's tablet push, and apparently they are ready to throw in a $10 subsidy for each Intel-based tablet shipped to attract first-tier vendors into the Atom fold.
Meanwhile, ARM is dominating the mobile space by licensing its technology to third parties such as Nvidia and Qualcomm. Their chips have proven more customizable, more energy-efficient and more affordable than anything Intel has to offer right now.

Microsoft hands out Windows 8 tablets at Build conference

|

Microsoft kicked off its Build conference by giving devs and members of the press a taste of Windows 8 running on a tablet. Both the hardware and operating are developer preview builds, of course, but it was impressively zippy and very intuitive to use according early impressions. As expected, the successor to Windows 7 borrows largely from its Windows Phone sibling by bringing its signature live tiles front and center. It represents a major re-think of how users interact with Windows, though the classic icons and windows interface is still there in the form of an app.
Windows 8 launches by default into the Metro interface with a lock screen showing quick notifications like battery life and your Wi-Fi connection. Within the Control Panel you can configure this screen with a regular password or set up a picture password, which lets you specify a set of three gestures that you'll use on top of a picture to unlock the device.
A swipe from the right edge pulls in a bar containing what Microsoft is calling "Charms" -- basically Search, Share, Devices, and Settings shortcuts as well as a Start button that takes you back to the home screen. With a swipe from the left edge of the screen you can navigate through other open apps, or snap them in place for a split-screen view. Lastly, swiping from the top or bottom of the screen brings up application-specific menus and options.
Microsoft bundled a bunch of apps with their test tablets for developers and press members to play with, including Internet Explorer 10, a basic RSS client, stocks, weather, social networking apps Tweet@rama and Socialite, among others. You can check out some of these in action as well as Windows 8's Metro UI in the video below:
As far the hardware is concerned Microsoft's test tablet was developed by Samsung and was running a 1.6GHz i5-2467M dual-core processor along a 64GB solid-state drive and 4 gigs of RAM. Other specs include a Samsung Super PLS 1366 x 768 display, full sized USB port, microSD, HDMI, and support for stylus input.
Microsoft will be giving each of the 5,000 Build attendees one of these to take home, complete with a developer build of Windows 8 and one full year of 2GB/mo AT&T 3G included for free. Unfortunately when the Samsung slate hits the consumer market (presumably) sometime later this year it will be running Windows 7, though.

Intel intros DeepSafe CPU security, will optimize Android for x86

|

android, intel, mcafee, deepsafe, medfield
Putting its $7.68 billion acquisition to use, Intel has announced a new processor technology it's deemed "one of the biggest innovations" in the security industry's history. Called McAfee DeepSafe, the framework sits below your operating system and will allow McAfee to develop hardware-assisted security features.
Intel didn't provide many details, but the goal is to detect and thwart malware that can evade your OS-level antivirus. In one example, DeepSafe stopped a zero-day rootkit called Agony from infecting a system in real time. More details should arise soon as DeepSafe is expected to ship in products later this year.
"When you operate below the operating system level you get a unique advantage," said McAfee exec Vimal Solanki. "You can monitor how the operating system is behaving and if there are any threats attempting to infect the OS itself." "I've been in the security industry 20 years and I've never seen anything as exciting."
Along with that news, the company has announced that it's partnering with Google to optimize future releases of Android for Atom processors. Intel has been struggling to gain foothold in the mobile CPU market and having Android optimized for Atom chips would give the company another ounce of leverage with device manufacturers.
A vast majority of today's smartphones and tablets are powered by ARM-based SoCs peddled by Nvidia, TI and many more, and that's at least partially because they're less power hungry than Intel's offerings. Intel hopes to shake up the market with its 32nm Medfield chips, which have been delayed numerous times in the last year or two.
Medfield will supposedly be more competitive on power consumption, but it's unclear if that will remain true when ARM's next-gen chips arrive in the form of Kal-ElKrait and others. In a clip posted by Anandtech (above), Intel showed the architecture's new ISP (Image Signal Processor), which captures up to 20 frames at 1600x1200.
"Combining Android with Intel's low power smartphone roadmap opens up more opportunity for innovation and choice," said Google's Android chief, Andy Rubin. The first Medfield-based smartphones were due sometime this year, but they've been pushed forward to early next year, according to the latest information we've seen.

Intel talks ultra-efficient Haswell architecture, Ultrabooks

|

One of the first topics discussed at the annual Intel Developer Forum today was Haswell, the codename for Intel’s next-generation architecture that will replace the Sandy Bridge platform. Intel chief executive Paul Otellini spoke about Haswell, Ultrabooks and future experimental architectures at the event.
Haswell will be built on a 22nm process using 3D tri-gate transistors but it’s the power consumption, or lack of, that’s garnering the most media attention. We know that Haswell will follow the unreleased Ivy Bridge and is expected sometime in 2013.
Today we learned that the ultra-efficient chip will reduce platform power by a factor of 20 without compromising computing performance. This will result in what Intel describes as all-day usage and 10 days of network-connected standby battery life in Ultrabooks.
To drive home the fact that they are serious about power consumption, Intel demoed a system running a chip that was only being powered by a single UV light pointed at a solar cell the size of a postage stamp. Note that only the processor was powered by the solar cell; the rest of the system was powered using a traditional power supply.
The system was running Windows 7 and a small animated GIF of a cat wearing headphones. Intel referred to this architecture as “Near Threshold Voltage Core” and claims the chip pushes the limits of thermal transistor technology to tune power use to extremely low levels.
Haswell will eventually find its way into Ultrabooks but for the time being, Sandy Bridge CPUs are being deployed in first-generation models. Ivy Bridge will eventually replace these CPUs in 2012, possibly at CES. According to Anandtech, Ivy Bridge GPU performance is expected to be up to 60 percent faster than Sandy Bridge and feature 2x better QuickSync performance.

Intel, Google collaborate to release Android phones early 2012

|

google, android, intel, arm, atom
Intel and Google have announced a new partnership that will see low-powered Atom CPUs and their successors running with Google's Android platform as the chipmaker attempts to launch itself into the smartphone market.
Intel executives stated at their annual developer conference on Tuesday that Android phones featuring Intel CPUs should be available in the first half of 2012.
Both companies say they will work together to optimize Android to run on the x86 architecture, a move that should speed up development and reduce the time to market of Intel based Android devices.
ARM based chips dominate the Android smartphone market. In contrast, Intel's architecture is unrivaled for desktop usage, but to date it has been rather inefficient in devices with limited battery life due to high power drain.
"The smartphone business is not established in terms of the ultimate shakeout of who's going to win and who is going to lose... You saw what happened in terms of how fast Android took share from Apple. So good products on good platforms can really still make a big difference in this industry," said Intel CEO Paul Otellini during his speech at the conference.
While Android should technically already support x86 architectures, the new partnership will make it much easier for manufacturers of Android devices to release their Intel-based products to the market. Until now it has been the responsibility of manufacturers to make the chips they use compatible with the Linux derived OS.
Intel hopes the close collaboration with Google will help win over manufacturers currently using ARM based chipsets by making the transition to Intel processors as painless as possible.

Microsoft confirms Xbox Live integration on Windows 8

|

Microsoft has re-confirmed that the company's Xbox Live service will be built into the next version of its desktop operating system. There are few details about the integration at this point, but according to a blog post by Microsoft's Director of Programming for Xbox Live, Larry Hryb (also known as Major Nelson), this week at the BUILD 2011 conference they will be showing how easy it is for developers to integrate the service into Windows 8 applications.
"We are very excited about Xbox LIVE coming to Windows 8.  Xbox LIVE brings your games, music, movies, and TV shows to your favorite Microsoft and Windows devices.  Bringing Xbox LIVE to Windows 8 is part of our vision to bring you all the entertainment you want, shared with the people you care about, made easy," wrote Hryb.
He promised more information about Xbox Live on Windows 8 in the near future and posted the image above as a teaser. Microsoft has already brought Xbox Live integration to Windows Phone. Now, as the company tries to push Windows 8 to desktops, laptops, tablets, and other form factors, this could provide huge exposure for the service.
Earlier this year rumors started to emerge that Windows 8 would even let users play Xbox 360 discs on their PCs, though online gameplay would specifically prohibit cross-platform matchups to keep the playing field leveled. Microsoft hasn't commented on those rumors but we're taking them with a sizeable dose of skepticism for now.

High-speed Thunderbolt interface coming to PCs

|

Intel has announced that high-speed I/O interface Thunderbolt will be making its way to PCs. The news comes from day two of Intel’s developer conference during a stage demonstration of pre-production Ultrabook designs, as reported byEngadget.
No specific release date was mentioned for Thunderbolt-enabled PCs, but Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager of the PC Client Group, showed the technology running on Windows 7. Reports in February stated that Apple will have exclusive rights to Thunderbolt until 2012. If I had to guess, I wouldn’t expect to see Thunderbolt on PCs until Ivy Bridge is launched early next year.
Originally known as Light Peak, Thunderbolt is Intel's high-speed interconnect that can transfer data between host computers and external devices such as displays and storage devices at speeds of up to 10Gbps. The interface supports hubs as well as daisy chaining up to seven compatible devices.
The technology has been viewed as an alternative to USB 3.0, although many devices based on the interconnect are not yet available and Intel insists the two are complementary.
The technology was developed by Intel and first brought to market by Apple in February 2011. Intel planned to use optical cable with the interface before it was realized that traditional copper could supply enough bandwidth to meet standards. Chipzilla is still developing optical Thunderbolt technology which will be used to transfer data over far greater distances.

AMD shows first working 28nm notebook GPU

|

AMD teased the first working 28nm notebook GPU to the public today at a media event in San Francisco, California. The chip in question, which is expected to launch as part of the upcoming AMD Radeon HD 7000 series, was shown running Dirt 3 but details such as graphics settings, resolution and FPS are unknown at this point.
The Radeon HD 7000 series carries the codename "Southern Islands" and will be built by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Last we heard, AMD's next-generation of graphics cards was scheduled to arrive by the end of this year, but with rumors that TSMC is having issues with 28nm production, it's unclear whether AMD will be able to release its new GPUs in volume or if wider availability will have to wait a bit longer.

David Cummings, Director of Technology Management for AMD's GPU division shows next-gen notebook GPU
The new graphics parts are expected to support switchable graphics and continue pushing current features like Eyefinity as well as H3D stereo 3D gaming. Although no official details are available yet in terms of specifications, NordicHardwarereports that AMD is initially planning four different GPUs based on the 28nm version of the VLIW4 architecture and will use them in three different series: the Radeon HD 7800, HD 7600 and HD 7500.
These GPUs will be equipped with 768 to 1536 stream processors and GDDR5 memory. Later on, the company will launch the Radeon HD 7900 series featuring the new Graphics Core Next (GCN) architecture it has been talking about since June. The main idea behind GCN is to create a GPU that performs well at both graphical and computing tasks.
Below are some leaked specs for the upcoming cards, though we should note that this information remains unconfirmed.
